Franciscan Monastery, Washington, DC |
The Mount St. Sepulchre Franciscan Monastery (Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America), founded by Franciscan friars in 1899, a stunning Byzantine-style church; cloister walk; and beautiful gardens with more than 1,000 roses and other plants, flowers and herbs located on 42 acres.
The chirch was built in the neo-Byzantine style, resembling Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
Attached to the Church is the neo-Romanesque Monastery. The Monastery grounds contain replicas of shrines in the Holy Land, a Lourdes grotto, and a replica of the Porziuncola.
It has a replica of the Roman Catacombs, as well as bones of Saint Benignus of Armagh, brought from there.
