Venice is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals, including the Grand Canal thoroughfare lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces.
The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark's Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city's red roofs.

San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th-century Benedictine church. As you approach the island, notice how the structure's white marble facade contrasts with the blue of the lagoon. Enter to discover its equally bright interior. Admire several paintings by Venice-born Renaissance artist Tintoretto, as well as many other religious artworks. You can take the elevator up to the bell tower for a small fee to discover views of the Venetian Lagoon.
